Choosing Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery enhances both your breast size and shape. Some women choose silicone or saline breast implants because they are unhappy with their natural size, while other women choose to have surgery to restore youthful shape and projection once they’re done having children and nursing. Your reasons are very personal and unique, but patients choosing breast implants find Dr. Ennis to offer the highest levels of skill and care available. He also specializes in the no scar on the breast procedure, with a transaxiallary incision. See some actual patient photos below.

Depending on your anatomy and your desired outcomes you’ll want to think about changing your breasts in the following way:
- The size of your shape pertaining to the volume you would like your breasts
- How far your breasts project out from your chest
- The shape that you want your breasts to hold
According to the Food and Drug Administration, you must be at least 18 years old for saline implants and at least 22 years old for silicone implants, as your breasts can develop even until your late teens or early twenties. You’ll may also want to wait until you’ve finished having children since pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the shape and size of the breast tissue. To ensure all breast changes are complete, you’ll also want to wait about six months after breastfeeding before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.
Breast Augmentation Outcomes:
- Increased fullness and projection of the breasts
- Improved balance and symmetry of a woman’s figure
- An increased self-esteem and self-image
- Youthful appearance of the breasts following pregnancy and weight loss
- Beautifully restored breast appearance through reconstruction after a mastectomy

Selecting The Incision Type
Another important step during your consultation is discussing the best incision for your body and your goals. Dr. Ennis will discuss the following incision options with you.
- Periareolar Incision
- Inframammary Incision
- Transaxillary Incision

1. Periareolar incision
The perioareolar incision is performed through an incision on the lower border of the areola. (The areola is the darker skin that surrounds the nipple.) Once the incision is made, Dr. Ennis works through the fat and breast tissues to reach the chest muscle and create an implant pocket. This technique will leave a visible scar on direct view of the breast, but it typically fades and is well hidden between the border of the darker areola and the breast skin.
2. Inframammary incision
The inframammary incision is created at the base of the breast, where the breast tissue folds and meets with the torso. Dr. Ennis creates an incision and works through the fatty layer and breast tissue to reach the chest muscle. He then creates the implant pocket and inserts the desired implant. This approach will leave a scar that will be visible upon inspection. However, for women with larger breasts (thus deeper breast folds), the scar is well hidden when the breasts are viewed directly.
3. Transaxillary incision
The tranxaxillary incision is made through a skin crease in the underarm. Dr. Ennis creates an endoscopic tunnel from the underarm to the chest, in order to create an implant pocket. The implant is inserted through the underarm and into the implant pocket. This approach leaves a scar in the underarm, which is typically well hidden after healing.

Understanding Surgery Day
Breast augmentation surgery takes approximately one to two hours to complete. If you’re undergoing another procedure at the same time, it may take slightly longer to complete your surgery.
During your surgery, Dr. Ennis will use the chosen incision technique to craft your new and improved breast size and shape.

The Three Steps of Breast Augmentation Surgery
Step 1: Your Implant Is Prepped
Once the incision is created, Dr. Ennis creates an implant pocket for the implant. The implant pocket is made either under or over the chest muscle and behind the breast tissue. The breast tissue and skin are stretched to create this pocket and accommodate your new implant.
Step 2: Your Implant Is Placed
Next, Dr. Ennis places the implant into the pocket, ensuring it is positioned properly for optimum shape and contour. Once your implant is in place, Dr. Ennis evaluates the size, symmetry and shape of the breasts. Sometimes the patient is raised to the sitting position to evaluate the breast appearance directly.
Step 3: Your Incisions Are Closed
Once Dr. Ennis is satisfied with your breast shape and symmetry, the incisions are closed with hidden sutures or tape. Dr. Ennis will take great care to create sutures that result in minimal scarring.

Breast Augmentation Recovery
After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in a gauze bandage to protect and support your breasts. Sometimes drainage tubes may be placed for a few days to allow for drainage of the surgical site. You might also find comfort by wearing a surgical bra while you heal. You’ll most likely be able to go how just a few hours after surgery.
You’ll likely notice some swelling in the surgery area for the first few weeks after surgery. However, it should decrease rapidly over the next several weeks. You’ll also feel some pain in the surgery area for the first few days after surgery. Dr. Ennis will discuss the appropriate pain management techniques to help you in those first few days.
You’ll want to rest for the first week after surgery to allow your body to heal properly. You should avoid heavy lifting for four to six weeks. Most women can return to work and household activities about a week after surgery.

Add Some Lift with a Breast Augmentation & Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
Breast augmentation reshapes your breasts and enhances volume but it doesn’t correct for sagging breasts. Since breast implants fill up the breasts but not lift them, you may choose to undergo a breast lift procedure in addition to an augmentation. A breast lift (mastopexy) will tighten up the skin creating a prettier, perkier lifted look. A breast lift in combination with saline or silicone implants can lift sagging breasts while improving the shape and increasing breast volume.
