Breast Augmentation Guide

It seems like almost overnight your breasts can begin to change shape. Your age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hereditary and gravity can all play a role. A breast augmentation procedure is used to enhance your breasts and create the size, shape & look you’ve always wanted. Whether you’re thinking about saline or silicone implants, Dr. Ennis can explain everything you need to know about choosing the right breast implant and augmentation surgery technique for you.

At Ennis Plastic Surgery, we understand that your choices for breast augmentation are personal and you should be treated as an individual with a unique look.  To learn about breast augmentation, contact Ennis Plastic Surgery at 561-405-9020.

When to choose Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery enhances both your breast size and shape. Some women choose silicone or saline breast implants because they are unhappy with their natural size, while other women choose to have surgery to restore youthful shape and projection once they’re done having children and nursing. Your reasons are very personal and unique, but patients choosing breast implants find Dr. Ennis to offer the highest levels of skill and care available. He also specializes in the no scar on the breast procedure, with a transaxiallary incision. See some actual patient photos below.

Depending on your anatomy and your desired outcomes you’ll want to think about changing your breasts in the following way:

  • The size of your shape pertaining to the volume you would like your breasts
  • How far your breasts project out from your chest
  • The shape that you want your breasts to hold

According to the Food and Drug Administration, you must be at least 18 years old for saline implants and at least 22 years old for silicone implants, as your breasts can develop even until your late teens or early twenties. You’ll may also want to wait until you’ve finished having children since pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the shape and size of the breast tissue. To ensure all breast changes are complete, you’ll also want to wait about six months after breastfeeding before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

What can Breast Augmentation do?

  • Increased fullness and projection of the breasts
  • Improved balance and symmetry of a woman’s figure
  • An increased self-esteem and self-image
  • Youthful appearance of the breasts following pregnancy and weight loss
  • Beautifully restored breast appearance through reconstruction after a mastectomy
  • How to get started

The very first step to your augmentation procedure is a consultation with Dr. Ennis and the surgical team. You will view before and after photos to help identify the size, shape and appearance you desire. Dr. Ennis is happy to answer any questions you may have about breast augmentation surgery.

    Selecting The Incision Type

Another important step during your consultation is discussing the best incision for your body and your goals. Dr. Ennis will discuss the following incision options with you.

    1. Periareolar Incision
    2. Inframammary Incision
    3. Transaxillary Incision

    1. Periareolar incision

The perioareolar incision is performed through an incision on the lower border of the areola. (The areola  is the darker skin that surrounds the nipple.) Once the incision is made, Dr. Ennis works through the fat and breast tissues to reach the chest muscle and create an implant pocket. This technique will leave a visible scar on direct view of the breast, but it typically fades and is well hidden between the border of the darker areola and the breast skin.

    2. Inframammary incision

The inframammary incision is created at the base of the breast, where the breast tissue folds and meets with the torso. Dr. Ennis creates an incision and works through the fatty layer and breast tissue to reach the chest muscle. He then creates the implant pocket and inserts the desired implant. This approach will leave a scar that will be visible upon inspection. However, for women with larger breasts (thus deeper breast folds), the scar is well hidden when the breasts are viewed directly.

    3. Transaxillary incision

The tranxaxillary incision is made through a skin crease in the underarm. Dr. Ennis creates an endoscopic tunnel from the underarm to the chest, in order to create an implant pocket. The implant is inserted through the underarm and into the implant pocket. This approach leaves a scar in the underarm, which is typically well hidden after healing. Breast Implant Sizing. Do you need a lift with your implants?

Choosing the right breast implant size is a highly personal decision and one of the most important steps in your breast augmentation journey. At Ennis Plastic Surgery, Dr. Scott Ennis takes the time to understand your goals and works with you to select the size that enhances your natural beauty and fits your lifestyle.

    Factors to Consider

    • Body Size and Shape: Your height, weight, chest width, and overall body proportions play a significant role in determining the most flattering implant size. Dr. Ennis evaluates these factors to ensure the results look natural and balanced.
    • Desired Look: Whether you’re seeking a subtle enhancement or a fuller, more dramatic appearance, your aesthetic goals guide the decision-making process. During your consultation, we’ll help you visualize how different sizes will look on your body.
    • Lifestyle Considerations: Active lifestyles may benefit from smaller or moderate-sized implants for comfort and mobility, while others may prioritize a more prominent look.

Choosing the Right Size with Expert Guidance: Dr. Ennis will provide his professional recommendation, balancing your goals with what complements your natural shape.

Breast augmentation is about more than just increasing size—it's about creating a look you’ll love and feel confident with for years to come.

Breast Implant Placement / Location. Over the Muscle or Under the Muscle.

The placement of your breast implants plays a key role in achieving natural-looking, long-lasting results. At Ennis Plastic Surgery, Dr. Scott Ennis carefully evaluates your anatomy and goals to determine the ideal placement for your implants.

There are two primary placement options:

    Over the Muscle (Subglandular Placement)

In this method, the implant is placed above the chest muscle but beneath the breast tissue. While this approach allows for a shorter recovery time, it may result in less natural-looking results for individuals with minimal breast tissue. Subglandular placement may also increase the risk of visible rippling and make mammogram imaging more challenging.

    Under the Muscle (Submuscular Placement)

This technique involves placing the implant beneath the chest muscle, providing several advantages that make it the preferred choice for many patients:

    • More Natural Appearance: The muscle provides additional coverage, giving the implants a smoother, more natural contour.
    • Reduced Risk of Rippling: The muscle layer helps minimize visible rippling, particularly in patients with less natural breast tissue.
    • Lower Risk of Capsular Contracture: Placing the implant under the muscle is associated with a reduced risk of capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue forms tightly around the implant.
    • Improved Mammogram Accuracy: Submuscular placement allows for clearer mammogram imaging, ensuring more effective breast cancer screening.
    • Enhanced Longevity: Implants placed under the muscle are less affected by gravity over time, maintaining their position and appearance longer.

Why We Recommend Under the Muscle Placement

Dr. Ennis specializes in creating natural, beautiful results, which is why under-the-muscle placement is often the best choice for his patients. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic outcome but also provides additional safety and longevity benefits, ensuring your implants look and feel their best for years to come.

What to expect with your Breast Augmentation Surgery

When surgery day arrives, you’ll meet with our board-certified MD anesthesiologist to undergo general anesthesia for your augmentation procedure. Breast augmentation surgery takes approximately one to two hours to complete. If you’re undergoing another procedure at the same time, it may take slightly longer to complete your surgery.

During your surgery, Dr. Ennis will use the chosen incision technique to craft your new and improved breast size and shape. He’ll also ensure the following three important steps take place:

The Three Steps of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Step 1: Your Implant Is Prepped

Once the incision is created, Dr. Ennis creates an implant pocket for the implant. The implant pocket is made either under or over the chest muscle and behind the breast tissue. The breast tissue and skin are stretched to create this pocket and accommodate your new implant.

Step 2: Your Implant Is Placed

Next, Dr. Ennis places the implant into the pocket, ensuring it is positioned properly for optimum shape and contour. Once your implant is in place, Dr. Ennis evaluates the size, symmetry and shape of the breasts. Sometimes the patient is raised to the sitting position to evaluate the breast appearance directly.

Step 3: Your Incisions Are Closed

Once Dr. Ennis is satisfied with your breast shape and symmetry, the incisions are closed with hidden sutures or tape. Dr. Ennis will take great care to create sutures that result in minimal scarring.

    Breast Augmentation Recovery

After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in a gauze bandage to protect and support your breasts. Sometimes drainage tubes may be placed for a few days to allow for drainage of the surgical site. You might also find comfort by wearing a surgical bra while you heal. You’ll most likely be able to go how just a few hours after surgery.

You’ll likely notice some swelling in the surgery area for the first few weeks after surgery. However, it should decrease rapidly over the next several weeks. You’ll also feel some pain in the surgery area for the first few days after surgery. Dr. Ennis will discuss the appropriate pain management techniques to help you in those first few days.

You’ll want to rest for the first week after surgery to allow your body to heal properly. You should avoid heavy lifting for four to six weeks. Most women can return to work and household activities about a week after surgery.

In the words of our patients

Hands down I am so happy Dr Ennis and his team did my breast augmentation surgery. I went to multiple doctors for a consultation but knew Dr. Ennis is the right person for the job. His team is also amazing and so welcoming. They made me feel comfortable start to finish. Dr Ennis gave me the perfect size implants and the surgery itself was such a quick and easy recovery! I had the surgery done through the armpits (something not offered at most places) and was moving around like normal after 3 days (not to mention my incisions are gone). I highly recommend Dr Ennis and his team and am grateful for all they have done
