When & why would you want a brow lift or forehead lift?
Aging is inevitable and the effects of aging on the face can be the hardest to control. Many times the forehead and eyebrows can be the first areas to show the signs of aging. Environmental damage from the sun, pollution, wind and the pull of gravity all affect the face. As the aging process advances, the collagen-producing cells diminish and the long-term effects of gravity cause the underlying muscle to stretch, making the brow prone to sagging and wrinkles. In some more significant cases, a drooping brow can even negatively affect a person’s vision.
An aging forehead and brow line creates an appearance much older than you are. Besides feeling old, these facial changes can create an appearance that is angry, sad, discouraged or tired. Your outward appearance does not accurately reflect how you feel. This disconnect in your emotional mood and outward appearance can be off-putting and negatively impact your social interactions.
Because of these age related changes, many people turn to a surgical procedure known as a brow lift, to restore confidence in their appearance.

Goals of a brow lift
The goals of a brow lift include:
- Reduce wrinkles and furrowed lines that run horizontally on the forehead
- Reduce wrinkles and furrowed lines that run over the nose bridge and between the eyes
- Improve the appearance of frown lines around the eyebrows
- Raise lowered/sagging eyebrows to a more anatomically correct and visually pleasing position
- Creating a forehead and brow line that conveys a youthful, refreshed and alert appearance
Types of Brow Lifts
The main difference in options for brow lifts consists of the placement of the incision. At Ennis Plastic Surgery, we perform two types of brow lifts, using the most up to date surgical procedures and techniques: the endoscopic brow lift and the browpexy.
1. Endoscopic Brow Lift
The endoscopic brow lift is the most common type of procedure. The lift requires 5 small incisions hidden in the scalp and severing the muscles between the brows used for expression. The combination of tightening and relaxing smooths the forehead, trimming years and overly pronounced expression from your face. The small incisions are created just behind the hairline for minimal scarring. An endoscope (a thin tube with a camera on the end) is used during the surgery to guide the surgeon and allow for a less invasive approach. Special tools are used through the small incisions to adjust and correct for muscle and tissue changes. The procedure corrects the sources of furrows and creases over the forehead.
The endoscopic approach to a brow lift is a more modern surgical technique, as older surgeries required a full incision along the hairline. Because it is less invasive, the procedure has less risk of numbness and scarring and leads to faster recovery.
2. Browpexy
The browpexy is a less invasive and more subtle surgical procedure to correct for brow sagging but has very limited use in most patients. The browpexy is performed most often in combination with an eyelid lift (upper blepharoplasty). This brow lift procedure returns the eyebrows to an anatomical and appealing location on the face, just above the rim of the orbital bone.
The browpexy is most commonly performed through an incision on the eyelid, at the same time a blepharoplasty is performed. The browpexy can also be done through a small incision above the eyebrow, if no blepharoplasty is done concurrently. The underside of the brow is attached to the lining of the orbital bone. This operation does not create as significant of a change as an endoscopic brow lift, but may be appropriate for individuals who only need a minimal brow lift or are looking to stabilize their brows from further lowering.

You may have a thin drain tube to remove any blood or fluid from collecting under the skin. Our surgical team will give you specific instructions to care for your surgical sites and provide you with any needed pain medications.
