What is a Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is cosmetic procedure with the goal of achieving proportionate size breasts in relation to the patient’s body. Additionally, the goal of a breast reduction is to alleviate the discomforts associated with large breasts and improve a patient’s emotional confidence.

Overly large breasts can lead to several health and emotional stresses including:

  1. Back and neck pain
  2. Shoulder pain and indentations from bra straps
  3. Forward rounding of the shoulders
  4. Skin irritation below the lower breast fold
  5. Insecurity while wearing bathing suits and other clothing
  6. Difficulty finding well-fitting clothes and proper undergarments
  7. Difficulty participating in athletic events or physical activity

Are you a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Individuals who are best suited for breast reduction surgery are those who are at a healthy weight but still have heaviness with breast size. Young women with painful physical and emotional stressors are appropriate, as well as women who have finished having children and are ready to address breast size.

For women who are heavy, with a high body mass index, it may be appropriate to first consider weight loss to determine if that will reduce breast fat tissue and reduce breast size. Additionally, it is important to note that a breast reduction surgery may negatively impact a woman’s ability to breastfeed. Therefore, some women wait until after they are through their child bearing years to have a breast reduction if their intent is to breastfeed.

The goals of breast reduction surgery are improvements in both physical symptoms and aesthetic appearance. Patients most markedly note an alleviation in pain symptoms.

Additionally, the newly shaped breasts have improved aesthetic appearance. Women typically do not mind the scars from the incisions, as they are minor in comparison to the beautiful new breast shape.

The Breast Reduction Surgical Procedure

At Ennis Plastic Surgery, our skillful surgeons always approach cosmetic surgeries with the intent of giving the best results with minimal incisional scarring. Breast reduction surgery is performed through incisions on the breasts. There are three main approaches to breast reduction surgery, with the difference lying in the placement of the surgical incision.

Each patient presents with different breast needs and breast anatomy, so the most appropriate approach will be determined based on individual needs. The chosen technique will be determined with an individualized consultation, in which the surgeon will analyze the patient’s breast composition, needed reduction, patient and surgical preference.

How long is the Breast Reduction surgery?

All breast reduction procedures begin with an individualized consultation with the surgeon. Breast reduction surgery typically takes 2-3 hours for completion. The patient is given anesthesia to ensure patient safety and comfort during the procedure.

About the Breast Reduction Incision

The incision is made on the breast tissue to access the fat, glandular tissue and skin that needs to be removed.

After the surgeon makes the incision, the underlying breast tissue and fat are removed, lifted and shaped. The nipple is repositioned and the areola may be resized by removing excess skin at the perimeter. Typically, the nipple remains connected to the original nerve and blood supply during the breast reduction. For women with very large and pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and relocated to a higher position on the breast, which is known as a free nipple graft.

Once the unwanted tissue is removed and the nipple and areola are properly positioned, the surgeon brings the incisions together to create newly shaped and smaller breasts. The surgeon closes the incisions in a way that supports the new breast shape. The incision lines are permanent* but will fade with time.

Breast Reduction Incision Options

  1. A circular incision around the areola: These incision lines are visible, but hidden in the transition where the darker areola meets the lighter breast skin.
  2. A keyhole or racquet shaped pattern: The incision is placed around the areola and then vertically down the breast toward the lower crease.
  3. An inverted T or anchor-shaped pattern: The incision is made around the nipple, down to the breast crease and along the natural curve of the lower breast crease. For many women, the inverted T or anchor-shaped pattern is the most appropriate choice, as this allows the surgeon access to the most breast tissue and is most appropriate for very large breasts.

Breast Reduction Recovery

The recovery includes several weeks of rest and healing with regular follow-up visits to ensure safe and appropriate healing.

The surgeon will place dressings and bandages over the healing tissues. Additionally, an elastic wrap or compression garment may be placed to reduce swelling and support healing. A small drain tube may also be temporarily placed to drain any excess fluid from the area. Patients should expect some soreness, tenderness, bruising and swelling immediately after the procedure. The surgical team will give instruction on how to care for healing breasts, including medications, monitoring, and activity restrictions. In general, patients should expect to have two weeks off before returning to work. Strenuous and athletic exercise should be avoided for 5-6 weeks.

While recovering from breast reduction surgery, it is important that the patient follows the recommended guidelines of the surgeon. This means keeping care of the healing surgical incisions, and eliminating any excessive force, motion or irritation during healing.

Once the surgeon has completed the procedure, the results are immediately visible. In time, the swelling will resolve and the incision lines will fade, further increasing satisfaction with the newly shaped breasts. The results of breast reduction surgery are long lasting. The new breast size and shape will provide long lasting relief from the pain and limitations that were present prior to the reduction. It is important to note that the breasts may change due to natural aging over time, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity.
