Nipple Reduction
Ennis Plastic Surgery in Boca Raton, Florida.
Many individuals, both men and women, are bothered or self-conscious about the size of their nipples. Some individuals are born with larger nipples, while others develop larger nipples during life events such as puberty and breastfeeding. Regardless of the reason, larger nipples can be addressed through a nipple reduction surgical procedure. This surgery corrects for nipple size, asymmetry and shape, giving immediate and lasting results.

Reducing the size of the nipple can give a youthful appearance to the breasts and enhance the appearance and outcomes of a breast lift or breast reduction. Larger nipples can be associated with advanced age, as compared to smaller nipples being associated with more youthful breasts. Larger nipple size is also associated with naturally bigger breasts. For men, large nipples can cause uneasiness when shirtless or when the nipples are prominently visible under clothing.

The Nipple Structure
The nipple and areola are two distinct anatomical structures and it is important to understand the difference between the two. The nipple is the outward projection from the breast, from which breastmilk is expelled during breastfeeding. The areola is the darker skin that that surrounds the nipple.
Many individuals are mistaken when seeking a nipple reduction, and in actuality they are looking to have an areola reduction. Additionally, many individuals choose to undergo both nipple and areola reduction procedures.

Individuals who may benefit from a nipple reduction are those who:
- Have large, protruding, or overly prominent nipples
- Have drooping nipples
- Have nipple asymmetry
- Are unhappy or self-conscious with their nipple size
- Are looking to correct for changes due to pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Are finished breastfeeding (as breastfeeding can negatively affect the appearance of the nipple and change the nipple after surgery)
- Want to combine cosmetic procedures for the breast (to include a nipple reduction as a part of surgery to address other breast concerns)
For many patients, nipple reduction is performed at the same time as a breast reduction procedure, breast lift and/or areola reduction. The nipple reduction is performed so that the nipple is proportionate to the breast size and shape.

Nipple Reduction Procedure
The nipple can be reduced in length of projection as well as in width, depending on the specific patient needs. During a nipple reduction, the surgeon makes an incision on the base of the nipple. The incision is relatively small, and therefore heals quickly. The placement of the incision is inconspicuous, so there is minimal scarring.
Nipple reduction surgery can specifically correct a largely projecting nipple through a procedure that is performed by pushing the nipple inward, like a telescope. The surgeon creates a shallow incision around the base of the nipple, where it meets the areola. Then, another superficial incision is made right under the tip of the nipple.
The surgeon is able to expertly remove superficial excess skin between the two incisions. The nipple is then pushed in and sutured in the desired position. This type of procedure shortens the nipple and corrects for nipple sagging. This procedure also leaves the duct system in place, so the patient may still be able to breastfeed in the future.
A nipple reduction procedure can be performed as a stand-alone surgery or in combination with another breast procedure. When the nipple reduction is performed alone, the entire surgery only takes 30-60 minutes to complete. When the nipple is reduced in conjunction with a breast lift or reduction, the procedure may take 2-3 hours to perform.

What to Expect from Nipple Reduction Procedure
Before undergoing surgery, the first step for any patient is to meet for an individualized consultation with one of our breast surgeons. During the consultation, the patient will have an opportunity to discuss his or her concerns and desired outcomes. The surgeon will conduct a physical examination and determine if a nipple reduction procedure is appropriate. The surgeon will determine the appropriate treatment plan of care and the patient will have an opportunity to have all of his or her questions answered.
For the surgery, the patient is given anesthesia to ensure comfort and safety. Once the surgeon completes the procedure, the area will be dressed with gauze bandages to ensure proper healing. The patient should expect some mild discomfort and swelling to the area for the first few days after surgery.
Nipple Reduction Recovery
Patients are able to return to work as soon as they feel comfortable. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 2-3 weeks, so as to avoid stress to the healing tissues. Additionally, patients should avoid sun exposure to the incision for six months, as sunlight can cause scars to darken.
The results of the nipple reduction surgery are immediate*. However, if a woman should choose to breastfeed after having the procedure, it is important to note that the act of breastfeeding may alter the nipple appearance.
